Multitudes of murals: Stories from the walls of four public art projects in Flagstaff

Every day in Flagstaff, neon signs illuminate in the daylight, men play chess by the pond in Heritage Square and Michelangelo’s statue of David stands tall in downtown. Flagstaff is a city of murals. Stories filled with history, fantasy and emotion adorn the walls that locals and tourists pass by each day and engrain themselves into Flagstaff’s identity. But within the brush strokes of each mural is another story, one of the artists and their journey in painting the city.

Written worlds: Poet Brews fosters connections through the spoken word

People filled the corridor-like room of Flagstaff Brewing Company, and one by one, they took to the mic in the corner of the bar that held the attention of many. Words of peach trees, passion, birth, grief and the impact of poetry on one’s life flowed out of lips, through the mic and into the ears of all present. Lights flickered behind the readers while passersby gazed through the windows to catch sight of the performances. At the end of each reading, the sounds of clapping and cheering overtook the room.

NAU hosts Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen

Four years ago, Frances Haugen joined Facebook to work on ending the spread of misinformation on the platform.
